Obituary for Doris Wilson

Doris Nevels Wilson, age 80 years, 1 month, and 15 days, passed away February 7, 2021 at Baptist Health in Corbin, Kentucky.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 12, 2021 at 12:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home with Bro. Larry Nichols and Bro. Mike Gregory officiating. Burial was in the Methodist Cemetery.

She was born December 23, 1940 in Nevelsville, Kentucky to CD Nevels and Dovie Ballou Nevels. Doris worked as a nurse for the Lake Cumberland District Health Department early in her career but decided to stay home and raise her children until they were ready for school. While working with the health department she worked in the community providing prenatal and postnatal care in the homes and was profiled in an article in the Courier Journal. After returning to the work force, she worked as a school nurse for the McCreary County School District and later taught Health Occupations at McCreary Central. During her time with HOSA, she was proud to have a student win in state competition and compete at the national level. Doris was a member of the Whitley City United Methodist Church where she had served as Sunday School Teacher. In her spare time, she enjoyed basket weaving, quilting, crocheting, and painting. Doris was an excellent cook and loved cooking for her family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, and a grandson, David Keith Wilson.

Survivors include the love of her life, Gerald Wilson, whom she married November 24, 1965, two sons, Michael Wilson, and wife, Jennifer, of Stearns, and Douglas Wilson, and wife, Maribell, of Randolph, New Jersey, a brother, Ralph Nevels, two sisters, Alma Faye Sexton, and her husband, Landon, of Pine Knot, and Patricia Neil McCracken, and her husband, William, of Fountaintown, Indiana and four grandchildren Kara, Emma, Erin, and Evan.
