Obituary for Elmer Shoopman

Elmer Ray Shoopman, age 81 years, 11 months, and 7 days, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2023 at his home in Somerset and placed in the care of Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home with Bro. Mike Casada officiating. Burial was in the Angel Cemetery.

He was born January 21, 1942 in Cooperative to Orville Shoopman, Sr. and Bessie Murphy Shoopman. Elmer proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After serving his country, he went to work for Hartzell Hardwoods in Piqua, Ohio as a timber grader and worked until his retirement. Upon retirement, he became a self-employed logger and enjoyed playing music. When he was not working or playing music, Elmer, who loved the outdoors, enjoyed taking walks in the woods and feeding the wildlife. He loved church and was a member of the Walkers Chapel Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. His favorite thing though was family time and he was known as a wonderful, Christian husband, father, and grandfather.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother, Ed Shoopman, and sisters, Vonda Shoopman and Mildred Foster.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Shoopman whom he married on Christmas Day in 1966, a daughter, Melody France and her husband, Mike, a granddaughter, Morgan France, brothers, Roy Eugene Shoopman and Orville Shoopman, Jr. and his wife, Sue, and sisters, Viola Freeman and her husband, Dennis, and Linda Hill and her husband, Freddie Allen.
