Obituary for Goldie "Janie" Irene Shelley

Goldie Irene “Janie” Shelley, age 98 years, 2 months, and 6 days, passed away at the Hospice of Lake Cumberland in Somerset, Kentucky on Friday, October 9, 2020 and was placed into the care of the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home.

A celebration of life was held at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 2:00pm EST with Bro. Braxton King, Bro Larry Ball, and Bro. Bill King officiating. Interment was in the Lower Cal Hill Cemetery in Pine Knot, Kentucky.

Janie was born in Pine Knot, Kentucky to the late James Andrew Ball and the late Rachel (Stephens) Ball on Thursday, August 3, 1922. An original GI Jane, she worked in a munitions factory in Michigan during World War II. Janie was a member of the Meadows Grove Baptist Church, for which she taught Sunday School and sang in for years. She was very competitive, as she played on the Revelo Fumblers softball team, and the Southern Belles softball team. She enjoyed reading and jigsaw puzzles.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, William C. Shelley; sisters, Julia Ball Estes, Millie Ball Barnette; brothers, Richard Ball, Darrel Ball, Hoyt Ball, Ralph Ball, Norman Ball, Mark Ball, James Ball Jr., Estes Ball, Carl Jack Ball, Claude Ball; granddaughter, Jonnie Rae Shelley.

Janie is survived by a large host of loving family, including: two sons, Dave Shelley (wife Brenda) of Stearns, Ronnie Shelley (wife Debbie) of Stearns; one brother, Ronald Ball of Stearns; grandchildren, Brandi Shelley, Janie Lynn Shelley, Billy Shelley, Haley Shelley; great grandchildren, Garrett Russell, and Sunny Coates.

The Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home was honored to serve the family of Mrs. Goldie “Janie” Shelley.
