Obituary for Joe Monroe

Roger Joseph Monroe age 73 years, 3 months, and 23 days of Sellersburg, Indiana, formerly of Stearns, passed away Monday, November 8, 2021 at his home and was placed in the care of Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 20, 2021 at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home with Bro. Braxton King and Bro. Doug Stephens officiating. Burial followed in the Stearns Cemetery.

He was born July 16, 1948 in Somerset to Roger H Monroe and Lula King Monroe, who preceded him in death. Joe was a loving and faithful son, husband, father, and uncle. He was all about family. He loved the Monroe, King, Hammond and Ross families and prayed for them often. He prayed with many family members and led them to Jesus. Joe loved the Word of God and was obedient to the Word. He was a faithful follower of Jesus and a faithful tither and generous giver. Joe was a member of Hope Church and a faithful member of the Body of Christ.

Joe was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and Mercer University with a Doctorate of Pharmacy. He was a hard worker, evidenced by the fact that by the age of thirty he had purchased and paid for Cooper’s Drugs in Oneida and built and paid for a home at Dogwood Acres Farm. Joe was gifted for helping people. If he knew your ailment and believed a natural remedy would help, it would be ordered and sent your way. During his long pharmaceutical career, he would often pay for the medication of patients who couldn’t afford it.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sheila Newport Monroe, and his daughter, Sarah Monroe. He was a loving “Unk” to Frank, David and Paige, who also survive him. When his dad, Dick Monroe, died, the Lord told Joe to read Psalm 116:15, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Joe was comforted, so we take comfort also knowing Joe was truly of one of God’s saints. He will be remembered and loved by many.

Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home was honored to serve the family of Joe Monroe.
