Obituary for Louise Lester (Stephens)
Gladys Louise Lester, age 89 years and 5 months, passed away Monday, October 10, 2022 in Somerset, Kentucky and was placed in the care of Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home.
Graveside funeral services were held Thursday, October 13, 2022 at 11:00 am at the Pine Knot Cemetery.
She was born May 10, 1933 in Pine Knot, Kentucky to Lloyd Oscar Stephens and Gertrude Crabtree Stephens. Louise attended Cumberland College and Eastern Kentucky University, obtaining a master’s degree in education. She began her teaching career in a one room school in the Pleasant Run community. She retired from teaching after 43 years of service with the McCreary County Board of Education. Louise enjoyed crocheting and decorating her home for Christmas and other holidays. She especially loved time spent with her family.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Carlos F. Lester.
Survivors include a son, Joel Lester, and his wife, Angie, of Pine Knot, two daughters, Sandy Sweet and her husband, John, of Somerset, and Carla Dieruf and her husband, Charlie, of Lexington, grandchildren, Joseph Lester, Michael Sweet, and Amy Sweet, great grandchildren, Paul Lester, and Alex Sweet, a brother, Charles Stephens, of Indiana, and two sisters, Emma Jane Marcum of Stearns and Etta Mae Lester of Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 110 Conn Terrace, Lexington, KY 40508.
