Obituary for Phil Stephens

Carl Phillip Stephens, 79 of Whitley City, Ky, passed away February 14, 2021 at UK Medical Center due to an extended illness, and was placed in the care of the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 20, 2021 at 1:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home with Bro. Harry Watters and Bro. Braxton King officiating. Burial followed in the Stearns Cemetery.

Carl is survived by his wife Monte Watters Stephens, daughter Kim Stephens Morgan (Stewart) of Lexington, KY, and three sons Carl P. Stephens II (Lana) of Denniston, KY, Tim Stephens (Mitzi) of Pine Knot, KY, and Shawn Stephens (Jessica) of Whitley City, KY. Brother Noel Stephens, sisters Betty Coffey, Shirley Daunhauer, and Linda Keith. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his Father, Luther B. Stephens, Mother, Charleen Hembree Stephens, brothers Val Stephens, Allen Stephens, and sisters Bonnie Stephens Sampson and Carrol Stephens.

Carl was born in Yamacraw, Kentucky on July 7th, 1941 (to Luther and Charleen Stephens). He graduated from McCreary County High School in 1960 and on June 1, 1960 married his high school sweetheart and love of his life Monte Watters, with whom he celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 1st of 2020. He was a veteran of the US Air Force where he served from 1961-1964.

He was a devout Christian and family man, having served as a deacon at Stearns First Baptist. His passion for woodworking served to lead him into a job a Jim Barna Log Homes Systems of Oneida, Tn. where he retired in 2008. His passion and commitment to his wife, children, and grandchildren are a legacy of love that will never be forgotten.
