Obituary for Rev. Harvey Matthews

Rev. Harvey Matthews, age 88 years, 9 months, and 25 days, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2020 at his home in Whitley City, Kentucky.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 1:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home with Bro. Hobert Corder and Bro. Garred Corder officiating. Burial was in the Blue John Cemetery.

Harvey was born March 22, 1931 in the Wolf Creek community to Hunter and Susie (Jones) Matthews. He was a member of Clearview United Baptist Church. Harvey served in the United States Army in Korea, worked for Stearns Coal & Lumber Co., drove for Dixie Transport, and he also hauled logs since an early age. He ordained in 1981 at Pleasant Rock United Baptist, he was first a deacon, and then a pastor. He enjoyed playing his guitar, fishing, Nintendo Dr. Mario, and family gatherings.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, Mabel, whom he married January 30, 1954, and his son, Harvey Matthews Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Danny Joe Matthews and his wife, Fran, of Wiborg, Don Matthews and his wife, Sandy, of Dora, Alabama, two daughters, Teresa Shannon, and her husband Lonnie, of Stearns, Kentucky and Debbie Worley and her husband, Roger, of Oneida, Tennessee, four brothers, Cecil and Ella Mae Matthews, of Smithtown, Estil and Glenna Matthews, of Hilltop, Bill and Judy Roberts, of Whitley City, and Jeff and Lorene Roberts, of Wiborg, a sister, Ruth Worley, of Independence, Kentucky, and a host of grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
