Irene New age 87 years, 5 months, and 19 days of Irmo, South Carolina, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012 at her home. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 30th, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Hickman-Stunk Funeral Home with Bro. Danny Staley officiating. Burial followed in the Nevelsville Cemetery. Irene was a member of Green Grove Baptist Church at Nevelsville. A dedicated Navy wife who took great pride in her husband's service and supported him on every assignment. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, and sewing. She was born in Nevelsville, Kentucky on March 7, 1925 to Reed and Nannie (Nevels) Owens. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence New; brothers, Bill, Hoyt, and Mike Owens; and a sister, Ruth McDowell. Survivors include her son, Larry New and wife, Irma, of Irmo, South Carolina; 2 grandsons, Christopher an Jason New, and 3 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dean Owens and wife, Freda; sisters, Elaine Walker and husband, Cecil, of Parkers Lake, Kentucky and Peggy Gabbard of Stearns, Kentucky. Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home served the family of Irene New.
