Alton Slaven, age 79 years and 12 days, passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 in Somerset, Kentucky. Funeral services were held Monday, February 13, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home with Bro. Maurice Branscum officiating. He was born January 29, 1938 in Worley, Kentucky to DeWitt Slaven and Janell Duncan Slaven. Alton served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1959 and later provided well for his family as an employee of the Dana Corporation in Marion, Indiana, from which he retired. In his spare time, Alton loved to fish and spend time with his family. Raised at Worley, a mining camp, he loved the river. Of all his accomplishments, and there are many, Alton was most proud of his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his only sister, Billie Jo Davis, and his brothers, Jack, Jim, June, Merrill, and Gene, and sister-in-law, Valda Slaven. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue Branscum Slaven, of Whitley City, Kentucky, sons, Michael Joseph Slaven of Winfield, Tennessee, Mendle Carland Slaven, and his wife, Dee, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Merrill Tyrone Slaven of Columbus, Ohio, Matthew Shelby Slaven, and his wife, Jenni, of St. Louis, Missouri, his brothers, Don Slaven, of Stearns, Kentucky, Paul Slaven and his wife Carly, of Strunk, Kentucky, and Gary Slaven and his wife, Brenda, of Somerset Kentucky, grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew,Daniel, Lily, Emma, Colton, and Sydney Slaven, and great grandchildren, Kaden, Adriona, and Sophia.
