Carl Shepherd, age 90 years, 3 months, and 12 days, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at the Jean Waddle Hospice Center in Somerset, Kentucky. Funeral services were held Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home with Bro. Daniel McFeeters officiating. Burial was in the Bruce-Shepherd Cemetery. He was born June 29, 1927 in Stearns, Kentucky to John Shepherd and Stella Hickman Shepherd. Carl was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member and deacon at the Stearns Seventh Day Adventist Church where he served the church in many capacities, including holding home bible studies. Carl was a supporter of the Adventist missionaries, Danielle Simmons was the recipient of his kindness and giving, Carl also supported the church financially. He had served as chaplain of the American Legion Post 115 and volunteered as a van driver for many years, taking veterans to the VA hospital. Carl also had a ministry at the Job Corp and at the United States Penitentiary in Pine Knot. He touched many young lives while shooting pool at the spot, In his spare time he loved feeding the birds and squirrels. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, Betty Irene Maxwell Shepherd, daughters, Carlene and Anna Lou, brothers, Dan, Noble, Jimmy, Granville "Bully", and Elmer Shepherd, and sisters, Dot Casill and Louise Hamby, Doris Shepherd, June Rowe, and Margie Redden. Survivors include daughters, Sue LaFavor and her husband, Dan, of Jacksonville, Florida, Gilda Long of Stearns, Kentucky, and Rita Christoff of Indiana, son-in-law, Tommy Carr of Jacksonville, Florida, Roger Tucker, and his wife Linda, of Whitley City, Kentucky, who he considered a son, sisters, Jenny Lee Leistman and her husband, Maurice, six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and seven great great grandchildren. Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home was honored to serve the family of Carl Shepherd.
