Elizabeth "Betty" Cobb Carty age 101 of Somerset, Kentucky, formerly of Whitley City, passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2015 in Somerset, Kentucky. In accordance to Mrs. Carty's wishes, she was cremated. She was born October 29, 1914 in Gainesville, Georgia to Edwin James Cobb and Rosella (Klingensmith) Cobb. Betty was a homemaker and a Veteran of the United States Army. She served in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) from February of 1943 to September 1945 during WWII. Soon after returning from the War, she met her husband, Dr. Joseph Raymond Carty, whom she married in December of 1947. Betty belonged to many clubs and organizations such as the Stearns Woman's Club, the McCreary County Library Board and the Woman's Tennis Club in Frankfort, Kentucky. She taught in the McCreary County literacy program and was a social studies teacher in Kentucky Children's Home. In past time, Betty's hobbies included playing tennis, horseback riding, golf, swimming, and hiking. She also enjoyed taking photos of nature, playing bridge, doing needlepoint, and writing letters. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Dr. Carty; and sisters, Edwina Rose Cox, Kathleen Virginia Larmee, Kennedy Hopwood, and Ellen Cobb. Survivors include her nieces and nephews.
