Herbert Kidd, age 87 of Stearns, Kentucky went home to be with his Lord on August 7, 2026.

He was born April 14, 1939, on Laurel Ridge, near Bell Farm, Kentucky; the son of Bradley and Dillie (Slaven) Kidd.

In addition to his parents, Herbert is proceeded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Grace Gregory Kidd; two sons, Michael and Mitchell; brothers, Auton, Howard, and Jessie; sisters, Lula Maxwell, Ruby Slaven; Millie Burke, Alice Gibson, and Delma Gregory; and an infant grandson, Herbert Andrew.

Surviving family include his wife of 30 years, Elvena Farris Kidd of Stearns, Kentucky; sons Gary (Teresa) Kidd, Woodruff, South Carolina, Hank Kidd, Stearns, Kentucky; daughters, Faye (Morris) King, Strunk, Kentucky, Norma (John) Benton, Springfield, Ohio; and Wheaton Slaven, Stearns, Kentucky. A Cousin who was raised with Herbert; Grandchildren, Allan, Cyndi, Megan, James, Tommi, Tiffany, Scottie, Michael, and several great grandchildren.

Herbert grew up on a large farm on Laurel Ridge. Due to his father's injuries, he sustained during World War 2, Herbert had to take over much of the farm work when he was about 14 years old. The family moved to another big farm in Lonesome, Kentucky about 4 years later. By then, Herbert had to do all the farm work. This included plowing two big fields of corn twice each summer; and one field was 15 acres! Herbert said he was very glad when it rained so he could rest.

Herberts father died while the family lived in Lonesome. A few years later, the family moved to Stearns, Kentucky. He continued raising a big garden, keeping honeybees, and grafting fruit trees, as long as he was physically able.

Herbert accepted the Lord as his Savior during a revival at Oak Grove Baptist Church at Bell Farm, Kentucky when he was 12 years old. He was baptized and became a member of the church.

After moving to Stearns, he moved his membership to Ross Grove United Baptist Church, keeping his family in church and spending Sundays with extended family. They were so close, cousins felt like siblings. It was during this time that his first wife, Grace, died.

Herbert was ordained as a deacon in 1995. He also served as a Sunday School Superintendent and Church Clerk.

Herbert was an assistant clerk for the West Union Association for several years. He enjoyed being a delegate, visiting other churches in the association in Kentucky and Tennessee.

After being a widower for 14 years Herbert met his second wife, Elvena, who had become a member of the church he attended. She was a widow of 4 years when they met. Three years later they were married. They enjoyed going to church, studying the Bible, gardening, and sitting on the front porch in the evenings, listing to the birds sing and watching the cars go by.

Herbert and Elvena moved their membership back to Oak Grove United Baptist Church with Herbert still serving as a deacon.

Herbert was a quiet, soft-spoken man who was dearly loved by his family and was kind and respectful to all he met.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 10, 2026, at 12:00 pm at the Hickman Strunk Funeral Home with Rev. Eugene Gregory of Muncie, Indiana officiating and Rev. Daniel Duncan. Burial followed in the Sherd Dobbs Cemetery.
