James Thomas Miller, age 79 years, 7 months and 7 days, passed away Friday, June 2, 2017, in Somerset, Kentucky. Jim was born on November 26, 1937 in Monticello, Kentucky, to Toney Miller and Lucy (Matthews) Miller. Funeral services were held Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home with Bro. Terry Baker, Bro. Roger Bryant, and Bro. Mark Sewell officiating. Burial was in the Elk Springs Cemetery in Monticello, Kentucky. After graduating from high school, Jim worked various summer jobs to put himself through the University of Kentucky School of Pharmacy. In 1962 Jim took a position with Burgess Drugs and moved his young family to Whitley City, he served a total of 38 years with the drug store. In 1963 Jim helped organize the Whitley City Volunteer Fire Department. At the time the fire department consisted of one old truck and whoever he, Jimmy Burgess, and Bon L. Bybee could get to help them. Jim's passion to serve his community, his vision, leadership and strong work ethic are evident in the fire department today. Many of the firefighters credit Jim for helping them become better men and citizens. At the time of his death he was serving as the administrative chief of the Whitley City Volunteer Fire Department. Jim was also a very benevolent man, many times he would secretly meet the needs of others without anyone knowing he was involved. Accolades were not important to him. Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers, Gene Miller, Jack Miller, and Little Toney Miller. Jim is survived by his wife, Pam Miller, son, Tony Miller and his wife, Mary Beth, daughter, Christy Lewis and Buck Tucker, Margie Miller, the mother of his children, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Helen Slaven, sisters-in-law, Lora Miller, Carol Miller and Beverly Crabtree, brothers-in-law, Mike Slaven and his wife, Paula, and Doug Slaven, and a infinite number of friends. He made his rounds everyday checking on things in town. Few people leave their community better than they found it, but Jim has left a wonderful legacy for his family, his community and his fellow man. He will be remembered fondly and missed greatly.
