Opal Hughes Jones, age 81 of Somerset, KY passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, Hospice of Lake Cumberland. Opal was born on January 25, 1945 at Greenwood, KY, the daughter of Luther Hughes and Marie Worley Hughes. Opal married Morris Lee Jones, Sr. on March 19, 1963 and they shared life for 46 years prior to his passing on January 23, 2010. She was a member of Old Fashioned Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Somerset, KY.

Opal worked at Lear Siegler, was a contract carrier for Bronston Post Office, Post Master Relief for Tateville, Parkers Lake and Ferguson post offices. She also worked as custodian for the Bronston, Burnside and Nancy post offices. Opal loved singing, reading and quilting… she enjoyed gardening, but her favorite times were spent with family, especially her grandkids.

Survivors include two sons, Mark (Sandy) Jones of Lexington, KY and Darren (Tiffany) Jones of Bronston, KY; one daughter, Roetta (Barry) Vaught of Somerset; grandchildren, Derrick (Jessica) Vaught, Samantha (Tyler) Fugate, Lincoln Jones and Penelope Jones; great grandchildren, Benjamin Vaught, Scarlett Vaught and Logan Fugate; her brothers, John Ernest (Ellen) Hughes of Florence, KY, Rufus (Betty) Hughes of Marshes Siding, KY, Thurman "Buddy" (Audrey) Hughes of Bronston, KY and Charlie Hughes of Whitley City, KY; her sisters, Juanita (Mack) Ledbetter of Science Hill, KY, Norma "Boo" (Don) Thompson of Florence, KY and Darlene Reynolds of Bronston, KY; extended family members, church family, friends and neighbors who are saddened by her passing.

In addition to her parents, Luther and Marie Hughes; Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Lee Jones, Sr; her brother, Leonard (Dottie) Hughes; her sister, Irene (Glen) Keith; her brother in law, Jack Reynolds and her sister-in-law, Fran Hughes.

Visitation for Ms. Jones will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, 1046 West Hwy 80, Somerset, KY 42503. Her funeral service will be on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at 12:00 pm at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Barry Vaught and Bro. Rufus Hughes officiating. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery, Phillips Ridge Road, Parkers Lake, KY.

Pallbearers will be Derrick Vaught, Mack Ledbetter, Ehren Hughes, Jackie Reynolds, Tyler Fugate, Charlie Hughes with Honorary Pallbearers, Lincoln Jones and Benjamin Vaught.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland in memory of Opal Hughes Jones.
