Obituary for Lula K Monroe

Lula K Monroe
Lula King Monroe, age 102, went to be with the Lord on Thursday August 10, 2017. And we know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
Funeral services were held Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home. Burial was in the Stearns Cemetery.
Lula was born August 22, 1915 in Stearns, Kentucky to Pete King and Bertha Turner King. She married Roger H. “Dick” Monroe on July 4, 1936. Two children were born to this couple, Joseph and Phyllis Monroe.
Along with her husband, Lula ran and managed the Stearns Hotel for many years. Lula was famous for her southern hospitality, her gracious manner as hostess, and her wonderful culinary ability. She loved to reflect on her time at the Stearns Hotel and share her memories. Lula was a member of Stearns First Baptist Church for many years and later was an early member of The Resurrection Life Christian Center. In her later years she loved to quilt, handcrafting each quilt with old world craftsmanship and love.
Lula is survived by her children, Joe (Sheila) Monroe, of Sellersburg, Indiana and her daughter, Phyllis, four grandchildren, Frank Hammond II, David Hammond, Paige Hammond Chaskelis, and Sarah Monroe, four great grandchildren, Jessica King, Megan Hammond, and Lindsey and Katie Chaskelis, and one sister, Maxine Clark.
Lula was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, and four sisters.
Lula was a shining example of a Christian wife, mother, grandmother, sister, neighbor and friend. Our lives were enriched by knowing Lula and loving her, for to know her was to love her. We take comfort and peace in knowing she fought the good fight, and kept the faith, and that her faith ended in sight. We have every assurance that she heard well done thy good and faithful servant, enter into the joys of the Lord.
