Maxine Williams Lawson age 94 years, 5 months, and 28 days of Whitley City, Kentucky died Friday, August 16, 2013 at the Shannondale Health Care Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 22, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Whitley City First Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Burgess and Dr. John Ditty officiating. Burial followed in the Pine Knot Cemetery.
She was born February 21, 1919 in Whitley City, Kentucky to Judge Joseph E. Williams and Nanny Mary (Lewis) Williams. Her father, Judge Williams, was McCreary County's First County Judge.
Maxine was married to James Monroe (Jimmy) Lawson, a local businessman, on August 4, 1934. They had two children, J. Ronald Lawson and Erma L.Osborne. She served as pianist and organist at the First Baptist Church in Whitley City for 56 years. Maxine also taught a primary Sunday school class for more than 20 years and was active in the Women's Missionary Union. She was a 1935 graduate of the McCreary County High School and loved to watch the Kentucky Wildcats play basketball. After her retirement and upon moving to Knoxville, to an assisted living center, she again used her musical talent to play for Sunday Church services and the other residents.
She is survived by her son, J. Ronald Lawson and wife, Gretta, of Simpsonville, S.C; her daughter, Erma L. Osborne, of Seymour, TN; 4 grandchildren, Jeffrey Lawson, Jonathan Lawson, Kristopher Bryant, and Laura Greene; 7 great-grandchildren, Brandon, Abigail, Alexandria, and Zach Lawson; Tucker and Tate Greene.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jimmy; brothers Hoyt and Joe Williams, and a sister, Kathleen.
Maxine will be remembered for her quick wit, her musical talent, her generous giving to other and most of all, for her devotion and dedication to God, her Church, and her family. She will always remain in our hearts and our memories.
