Mr. Schyler Jones, Sr. age 95 years, 5 months and 4 days of Smithtown, KY, passed away Monday, March 3, 2014 at the McCreary County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Pine Knot, KY. Mr. Jones was born September 27, 1918 in Yamacraw, KY to the late Gilson and Pearlie Jones. Beside his parents he is preceded in death by an infant son Ronald Darrell Jones; six infant siblings; brothers Herbert Jones and Boyd Jones; and a sister Bonnie Thompson.
Schyler is survived by his wife of 71 years, Pauline Hickman Jones; his children: Phyllis Callaway (Gary) of Bright IN; Sharon Haynes (Boris) of Whitley City, KY; Brenda Nelson of Smithtown, KY and Schyler Jones Jr. (Pat) of Pine Knot, KY. There are seven grandchildren: Brad Callaway, Jennifer Haynes Murphy, Blake Callaway, Mark Jones, Jamie Haynes Davis, Bridget Nelson King and Aaron Jones. There are eight great-grandchildren: Jasmyn and Brayden Callaway, Kenton Murphy, Payton Davis, Eli Jones, Asher King, Macy Davis and Emry Bruce Jones and several nieces and nephews.
Schyler was a member of Pleasant Rock Baptist Church of Smithtown, KY. In the past he had served as a Sunday school teacher at Whitley City Second Baptist Church. He was a Veteran, having severed as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. Schyler was employed as a coal miner for the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company, and as a service station attendant for Millard Stephens.
The main focus of Schyler’s life was his family. His great joy was children. He was a farmer raising cattle and chickens. He loved being outdoors and working in his garden. Schyler was a hard worker and lived by the Word of God.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 7, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home with Bro. Mike Cassada officiating. Burial followed in the Hickman Cemetery.
