Nedra Kathryn Brown age 75 years, 10 months, and 9 days went to be with the Lord, Friday August 2, 2013 at the McCreary Health and Rehabilitation Center. A celebration of life was held Monday, August 5, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Stearns First Baptist Church with Bro. Daniel Wightman officiating. Burial followed in the Angel Cemetery.
She was born September 24, 1937 in Whitley City, Kentucky to Thomas Sampson and Nora (Spradlin) Sampson. Nedra spend her life as an educator. Upon graduation from school, she attended Cumberland College, graduating with a Bachelors Degree and later earned her Master's Degree and Rank I from Eastern Kentucky University. She taught at McCreary County High School, Pine Knot High School, and McCreary Central High School. During her career of over 30 years she developed the First Parental Involvement program in the McCreary County School System. Later she also taught college courses at Union and Cumberland Colleges. Nedra loved teaching and had a fondness for teenagers, many of her students credit her with inspiring them to success, and as a role model.
Nedra and her husband, Eddie Brown, former McCreary County School Superintendent, were married December 28, 1955 and raised 2 daughters, Lisa and Leslie. She was a longtime member of Stearns First Baptist Church. In addition to teaching, Nedra loved to read and garden, growing beautiful flowers and vegetables. She had an immense appreciation and love of nature. She took great pride and delight in caring for her family and church work.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Eddie L. Brown, of Stearns, Kentucky; daughters, Lisa D. Price and husband, David, of Stearns, Kentucky, and Leslie D. Brown, of Ashland, Kentucky; a grandson, Andrew Thomas, known as A.T.; and a sister, Evelyn Colin, of Grass Valley, California.
After a life spent as a Christian, wife, mother, and teacher, Nedra touched an immeasurable number of students and friends with her generosity, love, and her uncanny wit. The knowledge she helped impart to so many will live on just as Nedra's memory will live in each of us.
